Mylar bags are used in a wide variety of industries and are used for many different reasons. Mylar is also used for other things. Remember those decorative balloons you see in a hospital gift store? Those are sometimes made from Mylar.

Industries that manufacture certain types of foods need packaging that seals these foods so that no moisture or air gets to the food. They use this for this purpose.

Mylar is made with polyester (part of the film) and nylon, and is a very strong and durable material, even though it does not weight a lot. The Mylar is then shielded with aluminum which adds to the strength of it and it adds an extra fence, so to speak, to help protect whatever is placed inside of it. Mylar bags cannot be penetrated very easily, so they are one of the most popular bags used by food manufacturing industries.

Other industries use this mylar as well. Take the raisin companies, for instance, or the grain places. These bags are used to store certain things like raisins, dried apricot fruit pieces (made by Sunsweet), Miracle grow that comes in bags, and so forth. Macaroni and cheese that comes with the cheese in the silver packets is sealed in these types of bags, as well.

The bigger ones, also known as foil barrier bags, are sometimes used by coffee and peanut manufacturers. This way they make sure that the nuts and/or the coffee are fresh and will stay fresh for a long time.

If someone happens to have collected a few of these bags, they can use them for other purposes and recycle them without the need to toss them into the recycle bin. They can be used to store food in the refrigerator or in the freezer. This makes perfect sense, as they are great at protecting food from getting wet. They are more than likely better for the freezer than the regular freezer bags that are sold for this purpose.

For added protection in the freezer, it might be worth purchasing a seal a bag machine. Place the food into the bags and then seal the bags with the extra sealer bags from the sealer machine and things will remain frost free for several months. This comes in quite handy for those who love to prepare meals ahead of time. Food sealer machines do have the part on them that seals the bags you buy specifically for them. Mylar can be sealed quite easily, too. The material that are made with allows them to dissolve quickly when heat is added to them.

Mylar bags can come in quite handy for taking trips, too, like a family outing. Foods will stay fresh for the entire vacation. They will not leak when they are sealed and they are critter and puncture proof. If a person does not have a food sealer machine and they cannot afford one, they can still seal the Mylar bags. A regular clothes iron will work. Make sure that the clothes presser is not set too high. Low is the recommended setting for this. If there seems to be extra air in the bags and it will not come out, use a straw to suck the air out before finishing the seal. Leave enough room (the opening) for the straw to go in and voila! Certainly, there are other things that this bag can be used for, whether they are brand new or used.
